Your summer nails, sorted

Put your French mani on hold for a few months – now’s the perfect time to go wild with colour, pattern and metallic. We asked award-winning nail stylist Metta Francis to show us her favourite designs of the summer. And the best bit? These trends are all super easy to recreate – although you may have to rope a friend in for that tricksy second hand…
Why wear one eye-catching shade when you can wear several? There’s no worry about your nail colour not matching your outfit here – the clashier, the better.

How to do it: Apply a base coat on each finger, then neatly apply two coats of each bright colour on alternating fingers. Finally, apply a top coat for lasting colour and shine.

A huge trend for this year, negative space nail art is where your uncoloured nail peeps through bold polishes. The half-moon manicure, with white and bold hues, is fresh and fun for sunny days.

How to do it: Apply base coat, then apply two coats of white polish to the top two-thirds of the nail. Using a thin, striping brush, paint a line of colour in your chosen shade at the bottom of the white. Add a second coat of colour to each line to make it nice and strong then apply top coat.

Ombré hair may be on the way out, but it’s still a massive trend for nails – and we couldn’t be happier! Prepare for oohs, aahs and ‘oh, I need that too’ from all fellow nail fanatics.

How to do it: Apply a base coat. Cut up a kitchen sponge, slightly bigger than the size of your thumb nail. Paint one coat of holographic polish on all nails. On the sponge, paint three thick horizontal sections with the metallic shades (just wide enough to cover the whole nail), holographic at the bottom towards the cuticle, maybe a blue ice in the middle and a copper at the top, where the free edge is. Make sure the colours overlap to create the ombré look. Dab the sponge on the nail very gently starting in middle, then moving to the left then right, ensuring you cover all areas of the nail. Repeat. Apply top coat.

Try these: Barry M Molten Metal in Bronze Bae, £3.99, Boots; Barry M Molten Metal in Holographic Lights, £3.99, Superdrug; Barry M Molten Metal in Blue Glacier, £3.99, Superdrug
